Update (September 11, 2004)

======================================================================

Dear Sayas and Colleagues,

Some time back U Tin Hlaing (ChE, retired Lecturer, Singapore Poly)

said that Saya U Tu Myint (Mech) had also retired and might be visiting

US and Bay Area.

The e-mail from Dr. Ba Thein (Mech/Civil) mentioned about Saya U Tu

Myint's visit to the Bay Area.

======================================================================

From Dr. Ba Thein

======================================================================

Dear Bay Area RIT Alumni International,

A couple of weeks ago, Saya U Tu Myint (Singapore Poly) and Saya

Gadaw visited Northern CA + Bay Area. I was able to meet him staying

at his friend’s house. It was their private visit to Northern

California.

After learning their tight itinerary, my planned proposal to the

BARITAI board of EC members for celebrating a welcome + honor Saya U Tu

Myint and Saya GaDaw and also an RIT-gathering in the vicinity of San

Francisco was terminated on the drawing-board. Please kindly accept my

sincere apology to all alumni who were waiting anxiously to welcome or

pay homage Saya and Saya-Gadaw. I feel sorry for my failure to

implement your wishes.

I met Saya U Tu Myint fit and sound both physically and mentally. I

was glad to hear and see again his distinctive voice and smile. They

were still the same as he had during his teaching-days at RIT. On his

first year as teaching in RIT, I think 1969 or 1970, as a fresh and

young faculty of Mechanical Engineering Department, he taught us

THERMODYNAMICS. I think then prescribed text-book was written by Reyner

Joel.

Most of Saya U Tu Myint’s lectures were in room 1/2 – 5 (short for

Room Number 5 in the 2nd Floor of Building 1). That lecture-hall was

right-above the RIT Library and most of the time it was occupied all

day. The busiest stair-way of Building 1 was located next to it. That

lecture-hall had also a rear entrance which was used by the students

who were late to the class or uncontrollably shaken to leave the class

early, go to RASU (Rangoon Arts and Science University), and relieve

their unbearable heart-problems, occasionally with tears.

Next to that hall, there was Saya U Sein Shan’s (He taught us

Partial Differential Equations) office and Mathematics Department, and

then main SetHmu Hall was next.

Some of the topics I remember which Saya U Tu Myint and Saya Mao

Toon Siong taught are reversible-irreversible process, the Three

(First, Second and Third) Laws of Thermodynamics, energy equation,

momentum equation, continuity equation, steady flow, internal energy,

compression- expansion processes, thermal efficiency, pressure-volume

cycles, pressure-temperature cycles, isothermal process, adiabatic

process, Rankine-cycle, Carnot-cycle, Otto cycle, Diesel cycle, ...

Today, if they ask me the difference between entropy and enthalpy, I

am partially-prepared to mumble "Not exactly the same, Saya. May be it

has not been taught yet, Saya."

RIT’s rich curricula of those days were, I believe, primarily

intended for its brainy engineering-students to be fully qualified in

Design and also to be fully prepared for further studies in advance or

graduate subjects.

I heard that Saya U Tu Myint and his entourage will proceed to

Toronto, Canada.

Yours Respectfully,

Maung Ba Thein

vacation, or whether they have switched to another ISP.

Update (September 6, 2004)

Dear Sayas and Colleagues,

Email from Saya U Maung Maung (George, ChE 66), who will be

attending Yangon-2004.

Yangon-2004

by Saya U Maung Maung

======================================================================

Ko Hla Min:

The month of August is over and we are into the first week of

September.

A few friends of mine interested in attending the Reunion have been

enquiring about the need to secure tickets for attendance of the

Reunion/Sayapuzawpwe.

I have directed them to look at the web site and look for information

there.

However, up to this day I do not believe there are specific information

as to when the tickets will be available and whom we should contact

(for attendees from the US) to reserve tickets, etc.

Some of my friends are eager to attend and are planning ahead and it

would probably put their mind at ease to know that a seat for them is

secure.

Hope you can get some information from the right person.

George

Editor's note:

Ko Benny Tan (Golden Sponsor for Reunion 2000 and Singapore 2002)

and Saya U Myat Htoo (sponsor of memento mugs for Yangon-2004) are some

alums that will be attending Yangon-2004.

If tradition holds true, there should be "reserved" seats for alums

[outside of the host country].

Met Ko Aung Chan (Mech 72) at the Dhammananda Vihara last week. I

first met him at Reunion-2000.

Heard some one talk about Yangon-2004 at the 99 Ranch in Daly City

yesterday. Later learnt that he is the son of Saya U Tin Win (Civil).

Saya U Tu Myint (Mech) retired earlier this year from Singapore

Polytechnic. After visiting UK, Saya is expected to come to the US and

possibly the Bay Area.
